A maintenance shop takes care of “Godzilla” robots at a big auto plant. About 6 robots break down per day. A maintenance crew can repair 8 robots per day on average. Robots are very expensive but very productive, and when they break down the plant has to slow down and loses sales at a rate of $1000 per hour for each stopped robot. Maintenance crews are paid $200 per hour total. a. How many crews are needed if we want to minimize costs? b. If the plant is moved to another country where manpower costs are ten times smaller, would the system’s design change?
