Watch a COMMERCIAL or CABLE television channel geared towards children or teens for an hour (not PBS). There are plenty so there should be no problem finding one. You can also watch a YouTube Channel that has commercials. During that hour, pay particular attention to the types of things being advertised during the commercial breaks and how the food items AND TOYS are described and shown.

1. How many advertisements did you see during the hour? Write the number down. Of those advertisements, how many were food-related?

2. What types of food AND TOYS were being advertised in the commercials you saw? Were the commercials generally for restaurants or for food to eat at home? Were most of the foods healthy or not? How many were primarily sugar-based? Primarily fast-food? WHAT WAS THE QUALITY OF TOYS?

3. What elements of the advertisements do you think would influence children? How did the commercials try to make the food appealing to the viewer? Or the parent? HOW ABOUT TOYS?

4. Is the food or toy presented in a way that is inviting to children or teens? Is the food or toy presented as healthy or as a fun "thing to have"? Is there also a message to the parent?

5. Did you see anything else unusual or odd about children/teen's advertising that you feel is noteworthy? Is it deceptive in any way? Is it honest? Has food advertising changed from the pandemic?
