Support/Maintenance
The support/maintenance section details the procedures required to provide support and maintenance for the subsystem you have developed. There are three sections to support and maintenance: Preventative or periodic maintenance, Requirement maintenance and ad-hoc repair maintenance. Your document needs to cover all three of these areas.
Preventative, or periodic maintenance is those tasks that must be performed on a regular basis. The regularity may be based on purely time, or may be based on usage. For example, a grease and oil change for a car is an example of a regular distance based action, checking water levels is an example of a regular time based action.
For each of the requirements you have outlined in your requirements document you must detail how that requirement is maintained. Additionally, you need to detail how maintenance is performed on your subsystem as a whole.
Finally, you must cover any ad hoc repairs that may become necessary. These cover items that may be damaged as they are exposed and may be damaged during unexpected operation.
For each maintenance item you must detail:
- what is being maintained
- what style; periodic, specific or ad-hoc
- how to determine if it needs maintenance
- What tools and/or parts are required for the maintenance
- how to perform the maintenance actions providing the procedure necessary to perform the maintenance action expected time to perform maintenance time to perform maintenance actions
