Question: Klass and Johns both talk about how joining and participating in new discourse communities requires a change in identity. In particular, Klass explains that to use any new language properly, "you must absorb not only the vocabulary but also the structure, the logic, the attitudes." As this happens, she says, "you move closer and closer to being a doctor instead of just talking like one" (para. 19). Before you read Klass, you were asked to think of a club, group, or workplace you are a part of and write down as many specialized words and phrases used there as you can think of. Go back to that list, and then draw on it and write something modeled after Klass's in which you describe the process of learning to talk in that setting, and how learning the language helped you take on the identity of that club / group / workplace. Before you conclude, be sure to talk about the trade-offs involved in that enculturation.
