Question: The purpose of this assignment is to learn how IT projects might be viewed by different stakeholders. Importantly, the learning outcome is to step outside the project manager's role and examine how others - in this case, senior management - view IT projects.

Instructions:

1. Use the opening case in Chapter 4, pages 152 and 191.
2. You are in the role of the CEO of Nick's company. The company's board of directors has requested you write a short analysis documenting your perspectives and insights about what happened with the next-gen DNA sequencing instrument. In particular, the board is concerned that yet another project lead on such a crucial program chose to leave the company. They want to know your assessment of what led to Nick's departure. The Board is not requesting you to make recommendations, though you are welcome to give them.
3. You do not need to explain or mention in your homework that you are the CEO - that is a given. You also do not need to provide research. You are giving your candid opinion. While you can base your writing on artifacts from the case, for example, "Nick did not understand top management's complaints," do not simply echo this artifact in your paper by writing "Nick didn't understand my complaints." Rather, make up a scenario or two where this issue might be manifest, and how it might have impacted the progress of the project.
4. You do not need to be strictly negative - although this could be your choice. Remember that according to the case, Nick had positive attributes as well. The board is not expecting you to bash Nick. They just want learn your assessment.
5. Assume you are communicating with the Board through a brief memo or email. Aim for a word count not to exceed 500 words. You should not spend more than 45 minutes total preparing your response to the Board.
6. Remember that you are addressing the company's board. Your writing and word choices should be appropriate for that audience
