Case Study: Whereas older and more traditional crime and prison films or shows, tended most often to highlight legal and retributive justice (i.e. incarceration as just retribution for criminal acts), in recent times, crime and prison films or shows have tended to engage more with restorative justice (i.e. seeking to repair harm by providing an opportunity for victims and perpetrators to communicate about their needs and address the aftermath of crime).
Questions:
1) Make a list of at least 5 crime or prison films/TV shows that you have watched (including those screened for this course like 'ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK' and OZARK'), and briefly answer the following questions?
2) Which films/shows on your list engage with retributive justice, and which engage with restorative justice?
3) How is trauma represented on both sides (the prisoners/criminals and victims)?
4) How is resilience also represented on both sides?
5) In what social or cultural contexts would we expect crime/prison films or TV shows to represent one kind of justice or another (i.e retributive or restorative)?
6) In what conditions or circumstances does the system of law and justice in a society bend one way or the other?
