Case Study: Dark Tourism - "Tourism Behavior and Expectation of Destination Image of Manila Paco Park and Cemetery"
Explanations / Reasons- Tourists are fond of the true tragedy stories and spooky events that have been told about specific locations, whereas locals indulge in terrifying stimulation experiences without understanding the dark history behind them. After a cholera epidemic broke out in Manila in 1807, an order was made to build a municipal cemetery that is now called the Manila Paco Park and Cemetery (Adminbdmc, 2017). During the Spanish colonial era, the cemetery was primarily intended as a municipal cemetery for the wealthy and affluent aristocratic Spanish families who lived in old Manila or the city inside Intramuros. It's also significant to note that Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgoz, and Jacinto Zamora, three martyred priests (GomBurZa), as well as Dr. Jose Rizal, our nation's national hero, were all buried in the Paco Cemetery. Why this location was designated as a National Historical Shrine is not surprising. as a 'pull' factor for tourists has influenced Manila Paco Park and Cemetery as a whole, including the municipality, the people under its jurisdiction, and its effect on the lives of the citizens. This research topic aims to discover why individuals visit sites associated with death, suffering, and tragedy. It aims to determine the motivations for dark tourism and how they differ from those of other tourists.
People ought to make an effort to have a deeper understanding of the causes of the tragic events in human history in order to prevent history from repeating again. It is necessary to conduct research to gain a better understanding of its implications and effects. This should be viewed as advantageous since more visitors will learn about and visit dark tourism-related sites. Deeper emotional aspects will be conveyed and evoked when visiting such venues.
The researchers are convinced that this research will advance current knowledge and help future researchers fully comprehend tourist behaviors, expectations, and the phenomena of dark tourism.
