Can someone explain clearly why in the preparation of Acetanilide that aceylation requires one mole of acetic anhydride per mole of phenetidine despite the fact that acetic anhydride contains 2 acetyl groups? How is the byproduct containing the 2nd acetyl group removed from phenacetin?
