Goal is to Describe the direct and indirect strategies for communicating unfavorable news. Americans generally prefer to present negative news indirectly to minimize disappointment. Other cultures may treat bad news differently. Interview peers in this class or work colleagues who were born in other countries, have lived abroad, or are familiar with cultures that are different from those represented in North America. Do not add the person's name give them a fake name or generalize it either way collect information by asking the following questions:
• How is negative news commonly handled in your culture?
• How would typical business communicators refuse a request for a business favor (such as a contribution to a charity)?
• How would typical business communicators refuse a customer's claim?
• How would an individual be turned down for a job? Report the findings of their interviews in this discussion. In addition, you should collect samples of foreign business letters. Search the Internet for sample business letters in other languages.
Alternatively, they might ask their campus admissions office or local export/import companies whether they would be willing to share business letters written in English from other countries and compare letter styles, formats, tone, and writing strategies.
