However, none of that is as important as maintaining security and order in your facility. Your primary function is the protection of the public. Considering the readings for this week and other research you may do, discuss the importance that is placed on security and order. How does the purpose of security and order influence the mission and vision of a correctional facility?
2. As a correctional administrator we hold ourselves to the highest ethical standard. In this discussion, let us delve into the ethical dilemmas and moral responsibilities that correctional administrators encounter. What ethical issues are most prevalent in prisons? Most often it is an issue of transparency and accountability. Discuss the importance of transparency and accountability in correctional administration. How can these principles help prevent ethical violations and promote a more just and humane system? What examples can you find through research that may enhance transparency and accountability?
3. In the world of correctional administration, maintaining discipline and order is of paramount importance. One of the key tools at our disposal is the concept of progressive discipline for employee misconduct. Progressive discipline is a structured approach to handling employee misconduct, which emphasizes corrective action and professional growth. What are the potential benefits of using progressive discipline with correctional officers? How can it contribute to a positive and professional work environment within a correctional facility?
4. How is it possible to have an empowered workforce, while at the same time mandating that all employees follow the same established policies and procedures? If you do not think it is possible to do so, please detail why it is not.
5. Why is it important to control the inappropriate use of sick leave by correction officers? Discuss three possible impacts of inappropriate sick leave on the budget of a correctional institution.
6. As you have learned, there are many factors to be taken into consideration with special populations in prisons. One of the major factors in the increase costs for healthcare in prisons is the increase in the numbers of elderly inmates; do you support the compassionate release of inmates, when they reach 75 years of age? Why or why not? Are there certain factors that should be taken into consideration when determining whether or not an inmate should be released at 75? if so, what are the factors that should be considered? If not, articulate why. What is a possible impact of the release of these inmates on society, in your opinion?
7. What impact do you believe that the prevalence of inmate mental health issues (in jails and prisons), may have upon efforts to establish successful individual reentry programs? If you do not believe that inmate mental health issues impact such programs, articulate why.
8. Stakeholders frequently have different and/or opposing agendas. In your opinion, how can a correctional leader maintain a working relationship with stakeholders if satisfying the needs and desires of one group requires a decision and/or action that is contrary to the needs and desires of another group?
