A young woman in her mid-30s, non-smoker, visits her doctor and complains of a frequent urge to urinate, dysuria, and abdominal pain. The doctor diagnosed this as a UTI and suggested she try an at home remedy and drink cranberry juice. Five days later, she arrives in the ER complaining of severe abdominal pain, and they found her UTI had become a severe kidney infection. They gave her ciprofloxacin, but within five days her blood pressure dropped, her heart rate increased, she was dizzy and confused, and developed a high fever. The doctors took a culture and performed a Kirby-Bauer test (below). They tried a different antibiotic and within 24 hours her symptoms improved.
