That is a question that is controversial however the study that I found shows that it is very important to memory. "Increasing evidence shows that REM SD will damage physical and psychological functions and will also disturb the formation and maintenance of learning and memory." (Jiao et al., 2022) Studies show sleep deprivation (SD) can cause the spinal nerves to lose density and plasticity. This leads to the hippocampus to lose plasticity as well. These areas are imperative in memory retention. The study I found takes adult male mice and randomly disrupts their REM sleep for various amounts of time to see if they could remember where 2-3 objects were. They were given a chance to explore the area with the items at least two times before they were subjected to sleep deprivation. The amount of time that they were exposed to sleep deprivation was 24,48, or 72 hours. They then compared the ability of the mice to find the same objects with mice who did not experience sleep
