Based on this scenario: This organism was isolated from the blood of a 65 year old man. The man presented to the hospital complaining of fever, fatigue, and difficulty breathing. the patient history indicated he had an infected tooth puled 2 weeks prior to his visit to the hospital. the man noted the dentists handled some of the instruments with his bare hands before applying gloves and performing the extraction. the man was administered intravenous antibiotics to clear up the endocarditis this man has developed.
Introduction:
Paragraph 1 : introduce the patient ( provide the background information of the patient, patient signs and symptoms, any treatments attempt thus far, current status of the patient)
paragraph 2: discuss why/how identification of microbes is important medically, and clearly state the objective of this project- why is the reason to identify this organism.
Materials and methods
paragraph 1: tell the reader where the specimen came from in the scenario.
Remaining paragraph: Describe the methods used to identify it. Be specific, but not too specific. the reader should know exactly how and what was perfomed, so they could repeat the experiment. should be written in paragraph form not listed.
Results
Pararagraph 1: provide a basic description of the staphylococcus aureus: gram stain reaction with cellular morphology then progress to Colony Morphology. Must include the following information in the following order: - Gram stain reaction - cell morphology and cell arrangement- cell structures (include how this organism uses the structure pilli, flagella, capsule, endospore former, etc. - colony
organize the test results in a table: example: Biochemical test results from patient Number 1.
Discussion/Conclusion:
state the name of the bacterium and the name of the disease it is causing to the patient
discuss the significance of the organism: include multiple statistics on number of cases each year in US or worldwide( www.cdc.gov/mmwr and at www.who.int). Also, include the reservoirs of infection, mode of transmission and hypothesis as where the patient most likely contracted this disease. Then, describe some of diseases this organism causes in addition to the disease affecting the patient.
treatment: research appropriate treatment for this disease and make a recommendation for the patient. a) recommend at least 2 antibiotics treatments for the microbe and describe the mode of action of each antibiotioc. b) if there any other non-pharmaceutical treatments, include those in the recommendation (rest, fluids, etc.). c) describe any antibiotics the microbe is resistant to and explain why. d) are all infections caused by this microbe treated the same way? is antibiotic treatment even recommended? why?
prevention: discuss ways infections caused by this organism can be prevented. a) include specifics for the patient's scenario on how this disease could have been prevented and how the patient's infection should have been treated or elaborate some recommendation for future treatment.
