Human beings have sought out mind-altering substances throughout their existence on planet Earth. Today, many drugs play major roles in life quality, such as with pain management. Yet, sentences for drug crimes are among the longest, and most people who are incarcerated today committed drug or drug-related crimes, and/or suffered from addiction at the time of their crimes, but had no access to drug treatment. Write a paper that explores these opposing realities -- explain how humans have "indulged" in drug use throughout history (how far back you go is up to you), and also the good that drugs have provided to human life, while also explaining how the U.S. has developed a system that treats drug use primarily as a crime rather than as a healthcare issue, and the impacts that approach has had on our society. Conclude your paper with a description of the progress being made and the direction that the U.S. should take with respect to drug use.
