Assessment: Case Study and presentation
This task requires students to form small groups of not more than 6, then prepare well-researched 20-minute presentations examining the impacts of colonisation, racism and oppression on a specific indigenous population. Your presentation should include:
A brief profile of the colonised population e.g. their location, population size, economy, way of life, religion, worldviews and ways of knowing prior to colonisation, etc.
The multiple impacts of colonisation on that population.
A critique of white privilege and its role in the colonising process. Self-representations of the colonising population vis-à-vis representations of the colonised group.
The ongoing impacts of colonisation on the indigenous population post colonisation.
Forms of resistance and counter discourses that have emerged in response to these impacts.
Human rights and social work responses i.e. how human rights bodies and social workers have responded (or not responded) to adverse impacts of colonisation suffered by this population.
