3. A water dispenser for pets has an invented plastic bottle ( the water is dyed blue for contrast). When a certain amount of water is drunk from the bowl, more water flows automatically from the bottle into the bowl. The bowl never overflows. Explain the operation of the dispenser. Does the height of the water in the bottle depend on the surface area of the water in the bowl?

4. Automobiles tires are inflated to about 30 lb/in squared, whereas thin bicycle tires are inflated to 90 to 115 lb/in squared-at least three times higher pressure! Why?

5. In his original barometer, Pascal used water instead of mercury. How high would the water column have been? Is this practical?

Chapter 2 : Fluid Dynamics

1. If a submerge object displaces an amount of liquid of greater weight than its own and is then released. What happen to the object? Explain.

2. An ice cube floats in a glass of water. As the ice melts, how does the level of the water in the glass change? Would it make any difference if the ice cube were hollow? Explain.

3. A submarine has a mass of 10 000metric tons. What mass of water must be displaced for the sub to be in equilibrium just below the ocean surface?

4. If the speed at some point in a fluid changes with time, the fluid flow is not __________.

5. When you suddenly turn on a water faucet in a shower, the shower curtain moves inward. Why?

6. Two common demonstrations of Bernoulli's Effects: (a) If you hold a narrow strip of paper in front of your mouth and blow over the top surface, the strip will rise. Why? (b) A plastic egg is supported vertically by a stream of air from a tube. The egg will not move away from the midstream position. Why not?

5. A 75 kilogram athlete does a single-hand handstand. If the area of the of the hand in contact with the floor is 125 , what pressure is exerted on the floor?

6. If a standard atmosphere supports a column height of exactly 76cm of mercury , What is the standard atmospheric pressure in Pascal? ( and )

7. The output piston of a hydraulic press has a cross sectional area of 0.20 . (a) how much pressure on the input piston is required for the press to generate a force of ? (b)What force is applied to the input piston if that piston has a diameter of 5.0cm?

8. A uniform solid cube of material 10cm on each side has a mass of 700g. (a) will the cube float in water? (b) If so how much of its volume will be submerge?

Chapter 2: Fluid Dynamics

1. A gasoline entering the pipe below at 15m/s. At 367kPa. Let us compute the speed and pressure at which the liquid leaves the pipe. Let the density of gasoline be 680kg/ .

2. The main opening of the pipe is 3.25cm in radius while the constriction is 1.5 cm in radius. If 14.56L/s of water flows through it. Compute for the pressure difference in the pipe.

3. An open tank is filled with gasoline to a height of 4.5 m from the bottom. A hole of diameter 2.4cm is at the bottom of the tank. How fast is the seepage? How many cubic meters of gasoline is wasted per second?

4. Water is flowing smoothly through a closed-pipe system. At one point, the speed of the water is 3m/s, while at another point 1m higher the speed is 4m/s. (a) If the pressure is 20kPa at the lower point, what is the pressure at the higher point? (b) If the pressure at the lower point was 18kPa, and the water were to stop flowing , what would be the pressure at the higher point be?

5. A tank is kept filled with water up to a depth of 8.0 m . Find the speed with which the jet of water emerges from the small pipe just at the bottom of the tank.
