One of Strings' main arguments is that fat became an identifier for racial differentiation: white women and black women could both be 'fat' and although one distinguishing trait was skin color, white women were soon encouraged to be thinner, as to draw out that distinction further, all while adding to the racialized ideologies about how white people were superior through their show of discipline in curtailing their caloric intake.

In this reasoning, institutions of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Capitalism, religion, modern science, and others are all at play in creating 'fat phobia.'
