There is growing evidence that, particularly in light of the 2008 Great Recession, baby boomers are likely to have plans to retire later, go back to work after retirement, participate in part-time work once they reach a certain age rather than fully retiring, or shift from paid to unpaid work as their primary activity in later life. These changes are some of the ways people are participating in a new phase of life called the third age. Consider someone plans for later life activity. What kind of third age do you think he will have? Will he work, volunteer, care for grandchildren, or engage in other "productive" activities, or do you think he will be more likely to engage in leisure activities? Describe what factors may play a role in shaping how he chooses to engage in society during this period of life.
