Assignment:
1. In what I assume is the 1930s-1940, John Watson stated, "To control a consumer, "it is only necessary to confront him with either fundamental or conditional emotional stimuli ... tell him something that will tie up with fear, something that will stir up a mild rage, that will call out an affectionate or love response, or strike at a deep psychological or habit need." (quoted in Buckley, 1982, p. 212)
a. How do you think Watson would explain why we can use emotion to "control consumers" from a behavioral perspective?
b. How have you seen these methods use to "control consumers"? Remember consumers could be who consumes tv shows or the news, who buys certain items.
c. Do you think this quote is true, elaborate why or why not?
2. Watson also famously gave the following parenting advice on how to raise children, as mentioned in your textbook, "Parents should never hug and kiss them, never let them sit on your lap. If you must, kiss them once on the fore- head when they say goodnight. Shake hands with them in the morning. Give them a pat on the head if they have made an extraordinarily good job of a difficult task ... you will find how easy it is to be perfectly objective with your child and at the same time kindly. You will be utterly ashamed at the mawkish, sentimental way you have been handling it." (1928, pp. 81-82).
Question: What about the behaviorist psychological viewpoint do you think would have caused Watson to state that (now questionable) parenting advice?
3. How did behaviorism/behaviorists change the role of who the subject was and who the experimenter was?
4. Where did John Watson stand on the impact of genetics versus the environment on a person? Explain fully citing information from the textbook.
5. State and explain at least 2 criticisms of Watson's behaviorism.
6. Who do you think the real Little Albert is? Back up your thoughts from quotes from each of the articles. Give good evidence behind your argument.
