ASSESSMENT
Learning outcome 1: Argue that all children have rights in terms of diversity, equity, and social justice
Learning outcome 2: Review early childhood policy regarding inclusion and diversity and its implication for curriculum across early childhood settings
STEP 1: THINK & PLAN
Find a policy document from an early childhood setting that speci?cally focuses on inclusive practice. Examples can be found below. 1
Critically review the resource & start planning/ outlining how you'd creatively reimagine the document based on your emerging understanding, and experiences of, inclusive practice.
Consider the following:
2 Does the de?nition and ideas about inclusive practice expressed in the document match with your understanding of inclusive practice? If yes, then work on how you'd creatively reword it/rephrase it in your own words & if not think about how you could re-create it to better match your approach
How have the rights of children in terms of diversity, equity, and social justice been represented in this policy? This builds on the understanding and acknowledgment that all children have rights (for example, right to be heard, right to contribute, right to learn). What examples of practice that evidence children's rights emerge from the reimagined de?nition?
How does this document illustrate responsive teaching practices that support inclusion, equity, and diversity?
STEP 2: DO & REFLECT
Create an infographic/ poster that will be used as a resource to guide families & staff. This will include 1 A recreated de?nition of inclusion based on your emerging understanding of inclusive practice a 3 - 5 examples of practice that advocate and evidence children's rights and emerge from your de?nition of inclusion. These can be based on your experiences in early childhood settings either through placement or your workplace. Please ensure that they are relevant to children's day-to-day lives and rights other than the ones stated in the UN conventions on the rights of the child, for example, the right to go on excursions, the right to refuse meals, and so on. Please also include a brief description of each of those rights.
Re?ect on how you critically reviewed the policy & the implications for practice. This will include:
A 200-word re?ection justifying the reimagined document: You need to use supporting research & resources from the unit content to justify the de?nition & the 3-5 examples of children's rights represented in the document
A 200-word re?ection on the implications for your own practice: How does this document engage with responsive teaching practices that support inclusion, equity, and diversity? Use supporting unit research & resources.
b Include a minimum of 4 references (2 for Re?ection a, 2 for Re?ection b)
Choosing a Policy: Please select an inclusion and diversity policy, either from one of the five policies listed on the assessment information page or from your own workplace/online source. Begin by summarizing the policy's definition of inclusion, then reflect on whether it aligns with your own definition. If it matches, paraphrase it in your own words; if not, create your own definition. Ensure that your selected policy is relevant to inclusion, as we've had students mistakenly choose unrelated policies in the past.
Examples of Children's Rights: The examples you provide should be directly relevant to children's daily experiences in childcare settings. Please avoid using examples from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, as these are not always applicable to day-to-day practice.
Infographic Poster: Your infographic should include your definition of inclusion and 3-5 examples of children's rights. Use clear subtitles for each right, phrasing them as "Children have the right to [specific action]" to maintain clarity and avoid abstract language.
