Writing: Narrative Essay
Global Theme: Education & Identity
Focus: For Essay #1, you will be writing an educational narrative.
Part I: First, chose a memorable experience in your education and describe it in detail. Then analyze the experience to see how it impacted your identity as a student. The experience you choose can be positive or negative, but be sure that it is significant to your life as a student. Focus on the analysis and explanation of how your experience shaped how you see yourself. Your goal is to help your readers gain a better understanding of your educational experience and how your education has shaped you thus far.
Part II: Additionally, we will draw from one of the course readings in this unit (W1) to make connections with the author's experience and your own: hence, you will choose an ESSAYfrom one that we have read to draw parallels and make distinct connections via details and direct quotes between yourself and the narrators. Choices from this unit include the following texts related to education:
• The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie• Learning to Read and Write by Frederick Douglas• Learning to Read by Malcolm X Reading to Write by Steven King• Mother Tongue by Amy Tan• Only Daughter by Sandra Cisneros• Salvation by Langston Hughes
Your narrative will reveal the following answers:
How did this educational experience shape your identity- both personal and cultural? What did you learn about yourself? How did this experience give rise to your voice? or lack thereof? What did you discover about yourself and your relationship to learning and literacy? What parallels did you have between your experience(s) and those of the authors in our unit?
