Homework: Art History Paper
Visit a museum close to your home or close to school.
Museums near CSUF: OCMA (preferred museum for this homework), Irvine Fine Arts Center, Hilbert Museum of California Art. Admission is FREE at all 3 museums/art center.
Visit the museum of your choice and choose 2 artworks to compare and contrast. You can choose paintings, sculptures, drawings, or any other medium of artwork you would like. Include color images of the artwork on the front page and label them with the title, artist name, medium, and year. Also turn in a selfie of you with at least one of the artworks.
You paper must be 2 or more pages single spaced Times New Roman 12 pt font. Respond to the the artworks explaining what you are attracted to in each piece. Interpret each piece analyzing what is going on in the artwork using the following categories:
I. Describe the artwork: use the elements and principles to describe the artwork and how it is arranged as a composition. Imagine you are explaining its appearance to a person without sight or the senses so that your words become a vivid and exciting description.
II. Content: What is going on in the picture what is the artist trying to say? Use specific evidence you notice in the picture to explain your interpretation. Consider the context of recent events contemporary with the year the artwork was made. Be imaginative in your interpretation, there is no wrong interpretation when looking at artwork.
III. Materials: How has the artist used materials? Do the materials exaggerate meaning in the artwork? What do these artworks have in common? Do they have a common themes or techniques. What is the underlying theme that seems to be emerging from all of the artwork as a whole.
IV. Compare and Contrast: Compare and contrast the two pieces, what do the artworks have in common? Analyze why you chose them and what you like or dislike about the artworks. Is one better than the other, explain why? Do they illustrate a similar theme or level of craft that you are attracted to?
