Reflective Practice Frameworks

Students are expected to demonstrate reflective practice early in their nursing education and throughout the rest of their nursing career. The CNO requires nurses to engage in intentional reflection to "critically think about your practice to identify the strengths and gaps" with the aim of strengthening your practice (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2022).

The Integrated Reflective Cycle (Bassot, 2013) is a model of reflection that will guide you through four steps to make sense of and learn from an experience. The model will allow you to explore feelings, assumptions and your own professional practice.

The Experience:

Choose one or two experiences from your lab activities and describe what you learned.

Reflection on Action:

Identify what went well and what didn't go so well in the above experience.
Explore your thoughts, feelings, and assumptions and ask yourself why.

Theory:

How has your "simulated clinical experience" in lab influenced your understanding of your professional or theoretical knowledge?

What will I now consider for next time?
What other strategies could I take to improve for future experiences?
