Research Paper Assignment

You will write a formal research paper that has three specific goals:

1. To feature the life and experiences of a person who identifies with African American culture.

2. To share research about that person's experience in order to highlight specific issues that impact African American cultural identity, and unique aspects of this cultural identity.

3. To show what you have learned from this course.

In order to meet these goals, you will need to use information from a personal interview. Analyze critically and summarize the information from you interview. Cite, quote and paraphrase your subject's words and ideas appropriately. If you so need, describe your subject or the circumstances of the interview. Write, too, about ideas we have discussed in this course (you may cite this class if needed). Research one or two ideas that your interview subject has mentioned. Use scholarly or government sources for your research and connect all ideas. This is a formal research paper; use the "I" voice sparingly, and focus information on description, narration, exposition, synthesis, and analysis.

Types of information you can research:

• Statistics about relevant events.
• Scholarly articles as reference to your subject's ideas.
• News reports, geographic information, and historical citations that can illustrate information in your paper.
• Background information about your subject's life and experiences.

MLA Format.

One to two citations (NOT including interview).

Length 3 Pages.

In my interview, I have chosen to interview a 30 years old lady known as Jane Peterson. Jane is an African-American who was raised in America. She is so kindly and she really good at cook. She truly makes me feel she just like my foreign mon. I met Jane Peterson through my cousin (homestay family, my cousin live in her house). Because of my cousin I also have interacted with Jane and learned her cultural perspectives, struggles, and experiences of the minorities in America. I chose Jane as my interview subject because she has immense knowledge and understanding of the African-American culture. The two questions that I will ask Jane can include:

1. How has racial differences affected you as an African-American?

2. What effects do racial discrimination has on the wellbeing of the black Americans?

Her cultural experiences as an African-American are in line with what I have learned this semester. The life experiences of Jane are different from mine as she has been brought up in a culturally diverse environment. I am interested to know how being an African-American affected her life.
