Question: Comprehensive health promotion programs are very important to have for individuals with developmental disabilities for multiple reasons. One can see how the general population strives to live a healthy lifestyle so it should not be any different for those with disabilities. However, this population can come across many barriers to living healthy. Individuals with special needs are more at risk to experience chronic illnesses in all domains of health such as physical, sensory, oral or mental (Prasher & Janicki, 2019).
For example, individuals with special needs can struggle with obesity, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, epilepsy, decayed teeth and more (Prasher & Janicki, 2019). This shows why a comprehensive health promotion is important. Every aspect of one's body is at risk for individuals with developmental disabilities. A comprehensive program would be able to support all the needs of this population. A comprehensive program is also important for the individual''s understanding. Studies have shown how healthcare providers report lack of resources or confidence in supporting individuals with special needs in their health (as cited in Prasher & Janicki, 2019).
A comprehensive program could also be used to educate healthcare providers on its importance. With all that in mind, one also must see the benefits for the people with special needs. Comprehensive programs lead to supportive settings for individuals to build personal skills and knowledge in their health. On the broader end, these programs rejuvenate health services, policies and community involvement (Prasher & Janicki, 2019). As I read and researched on this subject, it is clear that these programs are needed as the necessities grow with individuals with developmental disabilities.
