Introduction to Literature

ESSAY 1: "The Epic of Gilgamesh" and Lysistrata by Aristophanes

OVERVIEW: For the first few weeks of class, we have read two texts written thousands of years ago. On the Discussion Board and in your journals, we have considered what these texts tell modern readers about friendship and the role of gender in human relationships.

ESSAY ASSIGNMENT:

The plot of the ancient text "The Epic of Gilgamesh" and the Greek comedy Lysistrata by Aristophanes are guided by close relationships between people of the same gender.

Write an essay where you describe how gender roles influenced the nature of friendship thousands of years ago.

In your conclusion, compare the way gender roles depicted in these texts are similar to or different from gender roles in the twenty-first century.

As you make your argument, draw from the text and include at least one fact from the "Gilgamesh" module and one from the Lysistrata module.

POSSIBLE WAYS TO APPROACH THIS TOPIC:
- Compare expectations in friendships for men and for women.
- Define what characterizes male friendship and female friendship.
- Pick a quality like personal pride or respect and compare how the quality appears in male relationships vs. female relationships.
