First, select a "talk" (aka presentation or speech) that interests you from the 1,100 TED Talks (ranging in length from 3 to 18 minutes).
FYI: TED Talks was selected because each speech video should have enough depth or substance, and video quality to allow close viewing and analysis.

Third, listen to the presentation several times, paying close attention to how the individual uses non-verbal communication, composes sentences, and organizes thoughts, etc. Use the outline below to structure your analysis:

Four, develop your analysis using the variables in all 5 of the areas above. Make sure you develop your arguments and ideas thoroughly. On the Ted Talk website I decided to analyze a video called "4 Reasons to Learn A New Language" by John McWhorter. The purpose of Mr. McWhorter video is to "inform the audience" on how important it is to learn different languages. What made his speech interesting was he goes on to give express factual information on how the billions of languages that are available may soon become hundreds due to the excessive amount of people learning "English". If you do not know by now people in places such as China are learning more and more about how to speak English. . So what are the reasons to learn a new language?

1. He believes processing a different language can be your ticket to being able to participate in varieties of cultures of the people who speaks them.

2. If you speak two languages it can help lessen your chances of dementia, and allows you to be a good multitasker if learned earlier.

3. How fun it can be to learn different cultures, and how it all relates to one another even if it does not pertain to just one culture.

4. Languages can be place in different word orders.

Mr. McWhorter distinguished great posture, eye contact, and kept a steady tone of voice throughout the whole presentation. Mr. McWhorter, interacts with the audience by connecting with them by using PowerPoint visuals of people we may see on a daily basis (such as Trump, or even the Kardashian sister), which allowed his movement in his speak to support his message. The video consisted of lasting about 10 minutes, which was great because the audience was still alert, while he was talking.

What interest me about this video was that he was very concise when relaying the message to the audience. The arrangement of the presentation (such as the dim lighting) made the environment for the audience very cozy. The most important thing he presented was his credibility because the audience would laugh with him when he spoke of a joke, which meant that they really understood him.

The style he presented definitely represented Logos, because he gives great logic reasons of how important exploring different languages really are, along with given keeping short and simple which made his choice of words effective. What I loved about this video was how informative his strategies was when presenting different examples on language. For example, he expressed that French and Spanish speakers both distinguish a table to being feminine; which means if you ask them to say the word in Spanish "La would be the first thing they would say". To conclude, Mr. McWhorter captured the audience with his articulating words, his moderate tone, his jokes, and more important expressed the importance of learning different languages.

Purpose: General and specific purpose (and implied if different from stated purpose)

The general purpose of the video titled ‘Visual History of Social Dance in 25 moves,' was to provide a background and context to where many social dances originated from. The more specific purpose of the video was to show the deeper meaning behind some of the social dances that have become mainstream over the years. Social dances serve as a common language among others of similar lifestyles and signifies one's belonging to a certain culture. In addition, the video educates the viewer on how social dance often removes boundaries between different groups of people.

Non-verbal delivery: Movement in Your Speech & Visual Aids

One of the most noticeable visual aids for me was the presentation of each actual dance referenced in the video. This helped to keep me engaged while providing for entertainment and a deeper understanding of what was being said.

Strategies for Success: (Pathos: tone, emphasis, engagement), (Logos: clarity, conciseness, arrangement), or (Ethos: credibility, expectation, reference)

The speaker used several strategies for success during the presentation/video. Her tone was energetic and she placed special emphasis on certain words to heighten one's engagement. Her voice was clear and the delivery was concise. She provided important dates and referenced common knowledge to strengthen the material she was presenting as well.

Style Appeals: (to emotions, logic, ethos), Figurative language (similes, metaphors, symbols, imagery), Use of language, word choices (diction), and Passive or active voiSimple or complex sentences; short or long sentences

The speaker also incorporated several style appeals as well. She sounded excited and passionate about the material being presented, many facial and hand expressions were used such as the raising of eye brows, tilting of head, hand motions to enhance delivery, and she spoke in what I would consider an active voice.

Oral strategies and tactics: Music, Volume, Speech patterns (articulation, intonation, emphasis), and other sound effects

It is a little hard for me to describe exactly the types of speech patterns that were used, but they definitely coincided well with the background music and video portion of the presentation. She spoke at a medium pace, which made it easy to comprehend and placed emphasis as needed throughout her speaking.

The TED talk I chose to do is one of James Veitch's, "This is what happens when you replay to spam email." In the video, James' general purpose is to "entertain" the audience by narrating his personal experience when he replied to a spam email he received. However, that is not the only purpose options I found in the video, I think that James was also intended to demonstrate the audience how far the person sending the spam is willing to go in order to scam the reader.

The length of the video is nine minutes and 48 seconds. James uses active voice to narrate his experience to the audience. He uses a lot of visual aids to involve the audience in the narration; by doing so, he gets the audience to experience all the way what he did when interacting with the scammer. Throughout James' speech, he uses a lot of body language (movement) and non-verbal gestures and facial features, using regulators such as nodding his head, maintaining eye contact with his audience, and using paralanguage.

There is a connected interaction between James and the audience despite of the fact that he gave his speech from a platform. He keeps a public space between himself and the audience, but the message James conveys is very clear the audience. In the video, it is clear that James keeps himself within a circle, positioning himself not really within the Speaker's Triangle, as referred in our readings (Figure 11.3 pp 440-443), but he keeps moving within the circle without getting out of it.

James uses short and long sentences with proper grammatical structure during the speech, but while using long sentences, he pauses and compliments the sentence with facial gestures. The audience is also keeping eye contact with James, applauding and laughing. The audience is very well entertained.

I really enjoyed very much the video. James is very funny and keeps the audience's attention at all times. James' speech follows Aristotle's Rhetorical Elements and Cognate Strategies. His message is clear, it engages the audience. It is logical, it follows an order. It is very appealing, it gets the audience emotionally involved. The audience relates to James' experience.
