In the Blackhawk landslide in California, a mass of rock and mud fell 465 m down a mountain and then traveled 8.3 km across a level plain. It has been theorized that the rock and mud moved on a cushion of water vapor. Assume that the mud dropped with the free-fall acceleration due to gravity, losing speed at a constant rate.

(a) How long did the mud take to drop the 465 m?

s

(b) How fast was it traveling when it reached the bottom?

m/s

(c) How long did the mud take to slide the 8.3 km horizontally?

s
