Question

A merit pay increase is an annual adjustment to base pay. In contrast, incentives (or variable pay) are a wage in addition to base pay.

Employee benefits are not incentives, even if these motivate the individual. Benefits are pay for membership in the organization and are not based on performance. The eligibility for benefits is based on criteria unrelated to performance outcomes.

Question:

-With reference to an organization within your industry and/or discussed in the media/ articles, journals, describe a form of incentive you think is highly motivating. Why?
-How far down in the job hierarchy do these incentives reach? Which employees are eligible, and which are excluded from the plan you've described. Why? Does this support a well-aligned compensation plan?
-In your opinion, does the use of this plan help with retention, recruitment, or other specific strategic objectives? How?
