Case Study: Imagine that a family has made the difficult decision to leave their home country in search of safety elsewhere. What kinds of circumstances might have prompted the family to make this decision? What challenges might this family face as they travel and attempt to establish themselves in a new country? Families rarely uproot themselves in this way unless they are experiencing a myriad of hardships, such as poverty, danger, and discrimination. When immigrating families have broken apart, this separation adds an extra layer of trauma to an already painful experience with particularly negative ramifications for children.

Separation from caregivers is stressful for children, and prolonged separation derails the attachment process as children learn they cannot rely on adults to provide for them. In this Assignment, you examine the impact of family separation on a child's biological, psychological, and social development and analyze the ethical responsibilities of social workers working with families experiencing separation.

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper in which you:

Question 1: Explain how family separation could impact a young child's brain and the development of secure attachments.

Question 2: Describe several short- and long-term impacts family separation of immigrant families can have on a child's psychological and social functioning.

Question 3: Select two NASW ethical principles and explain how social workers could uphold these principles in their work with immigrant children who have been separated from their families.
