Proposal for improving the product's UI or documentation
Your proposal should be around 1,000 words along with supporting illustrations or mockups that demonstrate the changes you would like to make to the user interface. The copy of the proposal should contain the following information:
1. Brief statement of problem and research methods;
2. Protocol for your usability audit (the steps you took in soliciting information or running users through a task);
3. Summary of your results from the usability audit (derived from the notes you took during user observations, interview notes, survey results, etc.);
4. A discussion of what you feel needs to change and details of how exactly those changes will benefit usability on the site (this should be the majority of the document).
Illustrations or mockups are not strictly required depending on the website/app/product, but if you are changing a user interface, it will be much easier to explain your changes by showing a side-by-side comparison of the existing UI and your revised UI.
You don't have to recreate an app or website to show how you want to change it, nor do you need to deconstruct or alter a physical product. Photos/screen captures and very simple illustrations using Google Drawings, an image manipulation program like photoshop, or even a hand drawn illustration are more than sufficient to accomplish this task.
Keep in mind that if this were a real-world study, you wouldn't invest a massive amount of time actually changing an app/product/website at this phase. This project is the equivalent of a pilot study that would give you ideas for a larger (more expensive) usability study, that would ultimately lead to implementing changes to a product or system at a later date.
