Background:
As we learned in this unit, one of the changes in the news media over the past 2 or 3 decades is that news divisions are now expected to make a profit just like the entertainment and sports divisions of major networks. The way TV networks make money is by charging for advertising. The way for one station (or website) to charge more than another for commercial time or ad space is to have more viewers (visitors). So...for-profit TV news channels (and for-profit news websites) need to get lots of viewers.
Prompt:
Based on your experience, give at least one example of how even supposedly serious news programs try to entertain ore persuade us as much as inform us?
Specifically, think of political news that is ignored or downplayed while less important information is shown instead.
Hint:
Give a specific example that you have seen. If you don't watch much TV news, take some time to tune-in. Alternatively, you could base your response on a for-profit news website. Remember to distinguish between the shows that are meant to be news versus the ones that are meant to be entertainment.
