Assignment:
The ethical situation encountered in clinical practice:
During clinical placement in the post-op surgical unit, you encountered a significant episode during the care of a patient who had undergone a Right Hemicolectomy due to a high-risk colon polyp. The turning point came when the surgeon conducted an assessment and discovered that the sutures on the incision were dehisced and not properly in place. In response, the surgeon decided to apply a wound Vac dressing over the incision, which revealed the patient's organs.
Before the procedure, two experienced nurses had consulted with the doctor. They expressed concerns about using a wound Vac dressing over the exposed organ, highlighting that it wasn't the best practice in such a situation. Despite this input, the doctor insisted on proceeding with the procedure without providing any analgesia to alleviate the patient's pain before the procedure. It was evident that a power play was at play, with the doctor dismissing the nursing team's recommendations.
