Case Study: Ella is a 10 month old baby girl living in a row home in Philadelphia with her two parents. Ella's dad is a chef and her mom is a nurse at CHOP. Ella attends daycare 5 days a week. Their house is located 3 blocks away from a park that the family frequent's often. Ella is just learning to crawl and enjoys the baby swings at the park and watching Mickey Mouse on her mom's iPad. Henry is a 9 month old baby boy living in El Salvador (in El Salvador 2/5 people live in poverty and the country has one of the highest rates of criminal activity in the world). Henry's family lives in a small home made with mud and wood. There is no running water or electricity in their home. His parents both work on a coffee bean farm about 6 miles away from their home. Henry is often left in the care of his older siblings who are 5, 8, and 10 or he is cared for by an elderly neighbor while his siblings are working (in El Salvador 1.8 million minors between the ages of 5-17 are forced to work to support their families, usually in unsafe and unsanitary conditions). He has never seen a doctor (because El Salvador struggles to provide adequate healthcare, mostly due to poverty) but his family believes he is developing at a typical rate. Henry is also just learning to crawl and loves when someone sings to him.
Question: Write a minimum of 10 sentences about how Ella and Henry's different life experiences may impact their differences in development. Think about early-life adversity and sleeper effects (page 166 in your book) and the factors that contribute to physical growth and brain development.
