Is Globalization What It's Cracked Up to Be? was a paper that Marquette University professor Syed Akhter published. In his essay, he investigates how economic globalization affects human development and makes the case that corruption and economic freedom act as intermediaries in the relationship between the two. According to research, economic globalization has a beneficial impact on economic freedom and a bad impact on corruption. In turn, corruption has a detrimental impact on human development while economic freedom benefits it.

The World Bank Group's Integrity Vice President and Chair of the Global Agenda Council on Transparency and Anti-Corruption, Leonard McCarthy, is one of the leaders in these fields. He discusses how corruption distorts markets by "removing any notion of a level playing field" in his piece "Has Globalization Made Corruption Worse," and how free and fair market commerce is what spurs globalization and causes the world markets to work at their best. Additionally, he makes the case that corruption is becoming more sophisticated and can be attributed to globalization.
