Learning outcomes - The work that you do in this topic will help you to achieve the following learning outcomes in the subject:

1. What are the contingencies, the things that shape, the choices we make about organisational design?

2. What design options do we have as a managers when implementing organisational design, particularly in a VUCA environment?

3. What evidence is there regarding the impacts that organisational design has on performance?

Learning activity 1 -

Apply the framework of five contingencies to the organisation design in your organisation (or, your part of that organisation). Or, select an organisation that you have some knowledge of.

1. How easy is it to map the contingencies into a real example?

2. Are there any contingencies that are omitted from the framework that you believe shape the choice/s made regarding design?

Learning activity 2 -

So, what's wrong with functional, divisional, geographic and matrix structures in modern business environments? Let's test out the proposition put to you above.

Select one of the traditional structure designs and apply it to an industry of your choice. For example, IT services.

Thinking about the business environment in this industry and perhaps the kinds of strategic goals that organisations tend to follow, critique the practical value of this structure.

Using the knowledge that you have gained from this topic and other resources that you locate, answer the following questions:
