She is most recognized for her willingness to work overtime, helping her colleagues when there is an issue despite the culture difference, and her skillset.
Recently, the director of sales held a team meeting and implied there will be two new rules that would be implemented at the company due to the nature of the critical data and information that is constantly being shared on the floor. One, employees are not able to be on their cell phones while working on the floor. Two, employees are not allowed to discuss the company operations on social media platforms. If anyone was seen breaking the rule, they would be immediately terminated. The team took the news pretty well.
Samantha, a single mom of four, left her children with her mother back in her home country. She thought it would be better for the children to eliminate the culture shock they would receive if she decided to move them with her. One day, her mother warned her that her youngest child was sick. Samantha told her mother that in case of an emergency, to give her a call at work. As a worried mother, Samantha decided to keep her phone in her pocket for the day in the case of an emergency. Around noon, her mother called her to warn her of the status of her sick child. Samantha felt her cell phone vibrate in her pocket. She quickly ran to the nearest corner on the floor and took her cell phone out. She answered the cell phone and received the update of her child health.
A director from a the marketing department walked by and noticed Samantha on her phone. He quickly shouted, "Samantha! Are you on your cell phone? Did your director warn you of the new rules?" Frightened, Samantha looked and quickly told her mother she would call her back on her break. She then attempted to explain to the director her situation. He simply told her okay and not to let it happen again. However, she did not know he would inform her director of the incident.
Two hours later, Samantha director called her into the office. He begin to share with her his disappointment in her breaking the rules. As a result, she would be immediately terminated. Holding back tears, Samantha begin to explain what happened. However, her explanation did not justify her actions. She further explained how much she has helped the company grow since becoming hired but the director would not accept her explanations.
Leaving the building in anger, she wanted to justify her actions. She wanted her job back. She figured she would schedule a meeting with Human Resources to discuss her termination. After much thought, she asked herself, "was this termination ethical?"
