Nursing Theory Development Process
Write of descriptive narratives about dignity as a phenomenon. This narrative should focus on how the student has experienced and/or encountered this phenomenon in clinical practice. The narrative is not a clinical case summary; it should incorporate the student's reflections on the clinical experience and offer depth and breadth in thinking. Students may consider any or all of the following prompts during this step of the theory development process (Chinn and Kramer, 2011):
What feelings, values, and attitudes are associated with the phenomenon?
How is it perceived personally? By the patient /family? By the staff/organization?
What word labels or symbols are associated with the phenomenon?
What objects, properties, or events help to inform a deeper understanding of the phenomenon?
How does time influence the phenomenon?
Identify multiple concepts or sub-concepts in the narrative story
Explore the literature to help refine and support the concepts
Use peer review journal articles.
