Art Analysis: (this part is more you writing with your own ideas, not so much sources!)

"A Portrait of the Artist as a Shadow of His Former Self" (1980) Kerry James Marshall ( the art piece)

Question I. The art piece itself: How does this work of art tell us something about the world we live in?" (Art 21). Consider the concept--the ideas, choices or decisions the artist made to create the work (such as the selection of materials, installation decisions, color or image choices). Why do you think the artist made those choices? What visual, literary and/or historical references do they see in the work (if any!)?

Question II. Detailed Description: Using descriptive details, imagine the audience cannot see the image (though I'd suggest embedding it!), and use visual language to describe explicit details: the subject, scale, surprises!

Question III. Analysis: Then, add in implicit details, and your own unique ideas on: symbolism, surprises, color, composition, meaning, and ultimately, the message of the work, and how the artist, specifically, reveals the message using their medium and visual expression techniques!

Question IV. Before the conclusion, close the body section with reflective paragraphs on why you chose the piece, what it means to you, and why the work is significant and relevant today as a protest piece. This answers the "who cares?!" or "why?" question of your three-part thesis argument. Basically, why should your audience care about this issue? Close with a reflection and opinion on why this artist, the issue, and their work matter. Why is this work important now?
