Are there any events in Frida Kahlo's life that might be referenced in this painting? Kahlo's use of thorns makes an iconographic reference to what? The necklace is a symbol associated with beauty. This particular necklace, however, is made of thorns, which are piercing Kahlo's neck. What might a necklace of thorns say about the burden of beauty? Kahlo said, "They thought I was a Surrealist, but I wasn't. I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality." What do you think she meant by "painting (her] own reality"?
