Integrative health theory posits that health is composed by complex alignments between personal accounts (assumptions and explanations), performance (personal behaviors), efficacy (one's perceived ability to be successful in producing an intended result), and self-image (identity).

If all those factors are in alignment, the theory states that an individual will perceive themselves to be healthy. However, if changes occur concerning any of those attributes, alignment can be disrupted and, as a result, the individual may perceive themselves to be unhealthy.
