Later that day the Republican-controlled chamber passed House Joint Resolution 6 by a vote of 62-37, thus "codifying discrimination," in the words of Zach Wahls. Why do you suppose his speech (exemplary though it was) failed to garner enough support to block the amendment in Iowa?

Robert Kennedy was an exceptional speaker and a very well read individual. During this impromptu speech he was able to recall from memory a poem by an ancient Greek writer named Aeschylus. The poem Kennedy recited captured the mood of his audience by recognizing the pain of despair they might have felt after hearing the news of MLK's murder. The poem also encouraged his audience towards a disposition of thoughtful (some might call it prayerful) consideration for wisdom rather than expressive rage. You might not have a poem by Aeschylus memorized but if you were in Kennedy's shoes what text would you choose to share with this audience? Why?
