TOUR 111 Career Exploration

For this assignment, you will be exploring a career within the Canadian and Indigenous Tourism Industry. You may research this career using resources from the Internet and/or Library.

Please select a career to research that is in one of the 8 Sectors that we explore in TOUR 111 and is more advanced than an entry-level job. Select a career that you are interested in pursuing after you have graduated. Be creative! There are many careers in marketing, sales, customer service, management that you may not have thought of. Take some time to explore the various jobs out there. Here are some examples of careers you may explore within the various sectors:

1. Proposal

Please complete a 1-2 page proposal with APA-style title page that answers the following questions:

A.) What career would you like to research and why does this career interest you?
B.) Please identify a specific location/business in Canada where you can more specifically research this career. Why did you select this specific location and/or business? What about this location and/or business fits with your personal aspirations and ethics?
C.) What sector of the Tourism Industry does this career fall within? How do you know this?
D.) Please list 3 external references/sources of information that you will utilize in your research for this career. Why do you feel these are valid sources for information to complete your research?

2. Voiceover PowerPoint Presentation

You will need to create a "Voice Over PowerPoint Presentation" on the career that you have selected meaning that you will create a PowerPoint Presentation that you will record your voice to present the material for each slide. If you have never used Voice-over-PowerPoint, see instructions for how to complete this here:

This PowerPoint Presentation should be 5-8 minutes long. The PowerPoint Presentation will require the following Slides:

Title Slide
o Introduce yourself, introduce your presentation, include the name of the Career you are researching
o Name, Class, Date

Overview of the Career/Job
o Brief overview of what the job entails and where it might be found (location, destination). You can look at a very specific job (i.e. Tour Operator with a specific Tour Company on Haida Gwaii) or a more general position (i.e. Hotel Manager)

o What Tourism Sector(s) does the job fall within?
o How does this job contribute to Tourism Sector and the Tourism Industry (in other words, how does this career contribute to making the place a better place to live in AND visit?)
Skills and qualities required for this Job including Education & Experience
o List and describe any important skills and/or qualities individuals must possess to undertake this position
o What education and/or experience must one have for this career?
