Assignment:

Read Federalist, No. 84, which is located at the end of our textbook and answer the following questions.

1. Hamilton was directing this essay to staunch opponents of the Constitution, and on this point, at least, they were winning. He was also speaking to citizens of New York who admired their own state constitution. How did these considerations shape the way he framed his argument?

2. How powerful a government did Hamilton believe was established by the Constitution? Why did he think a Bill of Rights would be unnecessary? Whey did he think it would be dangerous?

3. Hamilton used historical evidence to discuss why bills of rights had existed in the past. Did that evidence have anything to do with the case he was discussing? How did he use logic to make the case that a Bill of Rights was dangerous?

4. Today many Americans argue that we have a right to privacy. People who interpret the Constitution strictly, as do many conservatives, believe that we have only the rights that are written down in the Constitution. How does this debate relate to Hamilton's argument here?
