Assignment:

Karnow, Stanley. Vietnam: A History. New York: Viking, 1983.

The Vietnam War is covered in detail, from the time of French colonialism until the end of the war, in Stanley Karnow's Vietnam is A History. He analyzes the conflict from both a military and a political vantage point and contends that the American military's "search and destroy" policy was ineffective and motivated more by political than by military factors. Summers thinks that option would have required fewer American soldiers than Westmoreland's exhausting "search and destroy" missions, and it would have decreased American casualties. He believed the South Vietnamese army should have been given the duty of battling the Viet Cong guerrillas. (page 17)

You need to make it more clear WHAT he is arguing and WHY. How does this book shift the historiography into the 80s?
