Case Study: Sound is used in various ways. It could be as simple as cueing the doorbell or phone at the appropriate time in performance to using music to set up mood and atmosphere in production. Sound is growing in importance in live theatre productions. Even though musical theatre has used music for its plot and structure, off and off-off Broadway are also beginning to incorporate music as means to move plot and reach the audience with nonverbal technique. For example, some productions actually place a band onstage playing live with the performance.

Film also uses music to move plot and a lot of times substituting dialogue as means to truly transcribe to the audience the scene's true meaning and style. In the film "A Knight's Tale" with Heath Ledger, the music used in the film differed from the time period the film is set in - they used modern music, such as David Bowie's "Golden Years" in the dance scene, to set off tonality in this historical drama.

choose a song or genre of music to set off your own play or film.
