Exemplar - ENGAGE Stage Description -

Group Idea: We will ask student volunteers to add a spoonful of baking soda to vinegar and observe what happens. The chemical reaction involving bubbles and fizzy sounds will be engaging and students will wonder "Why is this happening?" and "What could happen if even more baking soda and vinegar are mixed?"

Individual Section -

Pro: Students experience a typical chemical reaction. Group of students can change conditions to test ideas.

Con: Concept of a "chemical reaction" may be hard to understand. Some students may dominate group work.

Changes: I would allocate tasks in a group and use a diagrammatic representation to support weaker students

STEM: Relates to measurement of materials (chemicals) to test outcomes (slow/fast reaction).

Word Count: 116 Words. Word Limit: 250 Words.

Engineering: Problem solving. Designing, testing, revising and perfecting design plans to solve the problem of instability and meet the STEM challenge of building the tallest tower with limited recourses.

Maths: Choosing and measuring appropriate geometrical shapes.
