Prompt: imagine that you are working in the marketing department of a company and that you are evaluating the effectiveness of an advertisement the PR department has suggested the company put out. The higher-ups would like to know, based on your evaluation, whether this campaign should continue.
Memo format containing a visual analysis of an advertisement of your choosing, explaining the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the ad, using details from the advertisement to support your stance. The advertisements can be static images, but make sure that it gives enough information to sustain a whole paper.
Some things to consider
In describing the visual. What draws your eye first? Why? What's most interesting and seems most important? Does any use of contrast affect what you see? Is there anything interesting about how the text of the ad looks and how it is used (if at all)?
Consider the rhetorical situation. What is its purpose? Who is the target audience? Is there any other cultural, historical, or political context that's important to describe?
Consider the overall message(s). What elements are important in conveying the message? Which ones are not? How does the visual make you feel? What does it suggest you think or do? What techniques does the visual use to make you think, feel, or act in these ways?
