Background: In this chapter, your textbook discusses the theme of identity in art, particularly the way an individual's identity or search for identity influences their work (8.2). Identity can come from many different places. It can come from cultural groups, nationality, cultural heritage and ethnicity, gender identity, social class, and group affiliations (such as religious affiliations) (8.3). Works of art that represent the identity of the artist also challenge us as the viewers to think about our own identity. After reading this chapter, think about what your own identity is. You will be using an awareness of your identity in this discussion assignment.
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to think about your own identity and be able to explain how this relates to the artwork you surround yourself with.
Task:
Write down your idea of your own identity in relation to each of the categories listed in Background above: cultural groups, nationality, cultural heritage and ethnicity, gender identity, social class, and group affiliations. Be specific and remember that aspects of your personality (such as being outgoing or shy) are not considered "identity."
Then choose an object (such as a painting, photograph, sculpture, tattoo, print) in your environment (or one online if you don't have one readily available to you) that expresses your identity. Upload an image, photograph, or a screenshot so other students will know what you are writing about.
Fully explain the connection between your identity and this object. How does the object represent your identity to yourself, and illustrate that identity to others?
