Assignment:
When two very different peoples meet on the same land, there is always the potential for one master story to become dominant in the relationship that develops between them. And when one people impose their master story on another people in the name of the state, there is the great danger that the subordinated peoples' cultural heritage will be extinguished along with their story. In such situations, the master stories of the other are often obliterated when they come into conflict with the "imperial story" of the dominant culture.
This happens because master stories are not neutral. They embrace and express a particular understanding of reality and are deeply value laden: they can be either "hegemonic tales," enforcing a "colonizing consciousness" designed to erase a peoples' connection to their culture and their communities, or "subversive stories," restoring that connection."
With this quote in mind from Chapter Four of Mni Sota Makoce, in what ways the master story of Minnesota changed in your mind having read the book and learning more about the story of Dakota people in Minnesota? What did you find to be the most interesting/useful information? What would you have liked to have learned more about? A "master story" of the Dakota and the Ojibwe peoples involves the two peoples being depicted as traditional enemies. How does the material in Mni Sota Makoce complicate/change that master story? Use specific examples from the text in your answer.
